Omantel, the leading provider of integrated telecommunication services in the Sultanate, have announced on the sideline of the Company’s participation in Mobile World Congress a partnership with Huawei, the leading global networking and telecommunications equipment and services company, to deliver Oman’s first Smart Street Lamppost solution. The installation forms part of a wider agile network program providing integrated Huawei 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi Small Cell into streetlamps to enable extensive mobile coverage, and smart city services. This innovative solution will be deployed on trial basis and will be gradually rolled out to cover more areas.
Apart from allowing Omantel to enhance its voice and data coverage including mobile data and wifi in order to improve the services rendered to customers, the smart street lampposts have the flexibility to be integrated with cameras and intelligent sensors in the future in order to assist with services such as smart car parking and smart surveillance. As a result of the strategic partnership, Omantel is set to become the first operator in the world to deploy the Huawei Smart Lamppost innovative solutions.

The launch of the smart street lampposts aligns with the ‘Omantel 3.0’ strategy for digital smart home and business services which will be launched throughout the Sultanate starting from 2016. The innovative growth strategy aims to position Omantel as the digital partner of choice, in the consumer arena and for the public and private sectors, enabling the digital society to flourish and grow across all sectors in Oman.
